Kenneth Noland (1924 - 2010)

KENNETH NOLAND was born in 1924 in Asheville, North Carolina. After his discharge from the Army Air Corps following World War II, he attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina from 1946-48 under the GI Bill. In 1948-49, he spent a year in Paris, where he worked with Ossip Zadkine and had his first exhibition. On his return to the United States, he settled in Washington D.C.

Noland taught at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Washington D.C. from 1949-51, and at Catholic University throughout the ’50s. During this period, he became known for his Color Field paintings.

His numerous solo shows included a 1977 retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. His artwork is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Corcoran Gallery, Washington D.C.; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; and The Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL.

Kenneth Noland died in Maine in 2010.
