Press Release

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – AMERINGER | McENERY | YOHE is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by Liat Yossifor. The exhibition will open on 11 February and will remain on view through 12 March 2016. A public reception for the artist will be held on 11 February from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Liat Yossifor’s calm and cool, yet dynamic and energetic grey works convey the very language of painting through every decision, hesitation, and fearless swipe, scrape or whisper-soft marking. Creating and beginning again consume Yossifor - process is the unifying theme.

In these new small works, Yossifor inscribes seemingly random scribbles, or secret messages, in a rhythmic fashion. The pictorial lines are etched against raised surfaces created with thick paint. She switches back and forth from the pictorial to the physical, both drawing into paint and pushing colors again and again with the spatula or handle’s end of a palette knife until greying occurs.

LIAT YOSSIFOR was born in Israel in 1974. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1996 and her Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Irvine in 2002. She completed her residencies at the Ucross Foundation, Claremont, WY in 2008 and as a guest of the Deutsche Borse Residency Program at the Frankfurter Kunstverein, Frankfurt, Germany in 2010.

She has had numerous solo exhibitions, including “Time Turning Paint,” Pitzer College Art Galleries, Nichols Gallery, Broad Center, Claremont, CA; “Pre-Verbal Painting,” The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, St. Louis, MO; “Expanding on an expansive subject, Part 4: Liat Yossifor, Gesture (as) Consequence,” Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena Art Alliance Gallery, Pasadena, CA; “Falling Into Ends,” Galerie Anita Beckers, Frankfurt, Germany; “Project Series 32: Liat Yossifor: The Tender Among Us,” Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont, CA; and “The Black Paintings,” Noga Gallery of Contemporary Art, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Group exhibitions include “New Works,” The Margulies Collection, Miami, FL; “Stolen Gestures,” Kunsthaus Nuremberg, Nuremberg, Germany; “A Reflected Gaze,” Torrance Art Museum, Torrance, CA; “To Here Knows When,” University of La Verne, La Verne, CA; “Subject,” Lyman Allyn Museum, New London, CT; “From America,” Museum of Modern Fine Arts, Minsk, Belarus; and “The Real Me,” Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA.
