Press Release

New York, New York – Ameringer & Yohe Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of the 2007-2008 exhibition season with the work of Thomas Burke (b. 1978). Thomas Burke opens with a public reception for the artist on Thursday, September 6th, 6-8 pm.

Burke’s paintings transcend conventional movements, schools, and styles with a unique synthesis of Color Field, geometric hard-edge abstraction, minimal, Pop and Optical art. The artist composes undulating planes of color to create austere and complex three-dimensional environments that engage the viewer physically and challenge the notion of mind-body duality. Burke’s highly stylized pictorial vocabulary is a curious hybrid of ancient tribal mark making, ornate hieroglyphic characters, and futuristic psychedelic code that is devoid of superfluous rhetoric and referential subject matter. Burke’s paintings are visual algorithms that present art-as-art and nothing else.

Thomas Burke received his B.F.A. from University of Nevada at Las Vegas in 2002. He has exhibited with Western Project in Culver City, CA and Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard in Paris, France. His work will be highlighted in the upcoming exhibition Las Vegas Diaspora: The Emergence of

Contemporary Art from the Neon Homeland curated by Dave Hickey. Las Vegas Diaspora opens at the Las Vegas Art Museum of September 29 and continues through December 30, 2007. Thomas Burke currently resides and works in Brooklyn, NY.
