NOW REPRESENTING MATHIEU CHERKIT

Mathieu Cherkit in his studio, Vallery, France, 2024.

New York, New York — Miles McEnery Gallery is pleased to announce representation of Mathieu Cherkit.

French artist, Mathieu Cherkit, uses the familiar setting of the home to explore nuanced notions of space and time. Oblique lines and warped planes destabilize his cozy interiors, as if each object were captured from a different perspective and moment. Thick impastos of oil paint spill over the edges of the canvas—though stable, they appear precariously balanced, on the verge of gravitational collapse. Cherkit expertly navigates the tightrope between familiarity and discordance, creating tension that engages the viewer. By grounding his explorations in domestic spaces, he invites contemplation of shifting perceptions and altered realities, transforming the everyday into a realm of complexity.

MATHIEU CHERKIT (b. 1982 in Paris, France) received his Diplôme National Supérieur d’Expression Plastique and Diplôme National d’Art at the École des Beaux-Arts de Nantes Saint-Nazaire, Nantes, France.
