OLIVER ARMS

Press Release

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – AMERINGER | MCENERY | YOHE is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent paintings by Los Angeles based artist Oliver Arms. The exhibition will open to the public on 26 April 2012 and will remain on view through 26 May 2012. A reception for the artist will take place 26 April, between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. The public is welcome. Two-dimensional sculpting is one way to visually contextualize Oliver Arms’ antithetical painterly workings. Arms sculpts his paintings into completion over a lengthy period of many months. He continuously builds up his canvases with thick rich coats of different hued oil paint and then laboriously strips and carves the buried layers from the composition through countless and repeated industrial sanding sessions. The artist uses his controlled reductive and destructive process to erase a majority of the evidence of his hand. In these works, Arms is uninterested with overt personal expression and instead is more concerned with the hyper compaction of excessive, residual information. These perpetual iterations and permutations yield an abstraction devoid of purposed emotion and the self, ultimately leaving only compounded traces of the painting’s origins. Oliver Arms (b. 1970) attended the San Francisco Art Institute from 1988-1991. He has had solo exhibitions at such venues as Western Project, Los Angeles, CA and Charles Cowles Gallery, New York, NY. Recent group exhibitions include “Summer Group Exhibition” at Kayne Griffin Corcoran Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; “Elements of Nature,” at the Brevard Art Museum, Melbourne, FL and the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, LA; “The First Six Years,” at Western Project, Los Angeles, CA; “Locals Only,” at Look Gallery, Los Angeles, CA; and “Art LA,” Santa Monica, CA. His work is included in the Frederick R. Weisman collection. The artist currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Ameringer | McEnery | Yohe is open Tuesday through Saturday 10AM - 6PM and by appointment. Press contact: Thomas Quigley at TQ@amy-nyc.com
