NEW YORK, NY – In celebration of the 30th anniversary of The Armory Show, Miles McEnery Gallery is delighted to announce “Light, Line, & Form,” a group presentation of 12 artists, featuring Trudy Benson, Rosson Crow, Lisa Corinne Davis, Inka Essenhigh, Beverly Fishman, Pia Fries, Gabrielle Garland, Isca Greenfield-Sanders, Liz Nielsen, Fiona Rae, Tracy Thomason, and Emily Weiner.

As they span diverse backgrounds, media, and artist practices, each render light, line, and form as vehicles to convey gender, identity, race, and human consciousness. Expanding limits in exploration of their respective medium, the artists unfold insight and personal dialogue into the contemporary sphere.

Light peers through natural forest and domestic scenery, marking depictions with a sense of nostalgia and dreamlike atmospheres. Isca Greenfield-Sanders’ soft hillsides grasp glimpses of nature devoid of human presence, while works by Inka Essenhigh contort light, trees, and fantastical figures. Gabrielle Garland’s residential interiors and facades distort in bending and skewed planes, personifying places of home.

Others invite viewers to consider line and gesture alongside art historical and sociocultural imagery. Pia Fries, former student of Gerhard Richter, interweaves impasto brushstrokes with 16th century Mannerist engravings and Emily Weiner places Jungian symbols of the subconscious centered within Transcendentalist visuals. Fiona Rae, one of the Young British Artists, simultaneously encodes her visual lexicon with 90s computer graphics and typography while Rosson Crow’s acid-hued canvases overflow with collaged marble busts and political rallies.

Geometric abstraction forms in vibrant palettes with conceptual motifs in urban and digital landscapes. Lisa Corinne Davis investigates the complexities of race, culture and classification in imagined maps while Trudy Benson draws visuals from early pixelated computer screens in bright airbrushed grids. The artists on view also innovate through new material and its manipulation. Known as “light paintings,” contemporary photographer Liz Nielsen assembles shapes in her photograms, Beverly Fishman composes polyurethane sculptural reliefs, and Tracy Thomason infuses marble dust to create rich textural lines over each surface.
