Press Release

Over the course of the past two decades, Daniel Rich’s paintings have depicted opaque facades and exteriors of politically and socially charged spaces and pictorial architecture. In his most recent body of work titled Parallels, Rich welcomes us inside. This exhibition focuses on unpeopled interiors that resonate with a profound sense of quietude.

Inspired by historical, social, cultural, and (geo)politically significant events, the interiors in this exhibition allow the viewer to imagine their own body in these spaces:“apprehensive, invited, voyeuristic...” Rich writes,“Interiors have the potential to evoke meaning for the viewer as well as for the artist.”

The artists’ own photographs, imagery sourced from news media and online image searches, as well as Oskar Schlemmer’s 1932 painting Bauhaus Stairway and the writing of Hans Fallada all served as inspiration for the works on view. With titles such as Archive (for Hannah Arendt), Hong Kong University, and HKW Berlin to guide us, Rich invites the viewer to join in on a timely exploration of interior imagery.

Daniel Rich (b. 1977 in Ulm, Germany) received his Master of Fine Arts in 2004 from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA.
