New York, New York – Ameringer | McEnery | Yohe is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition of paintings by Liat Yossifor. Thought Patterns will open on 11 October and will remain on view through 10 November 2012. A reception for the artist will take place 11 October, between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. The public is welcome.
With the occasional dash of blue or black paint, Liat Yossifor wields her palette knife quickly and deliberately to create each monochromatic gray gestural painting.
Yossifor paints these works in one shot, until one thick layer of oil paint begins to harden. The marks she creates reflect thinking processes that occur during this accelerated method of painting. Repetition and thought interruptions are gestured with knife work, and black lines are delineated before they can become descriptive.
These paintings get done and undone in a moment’s time. The depictive black lines are undone by strokes of thick gray paint, and this method is repeated throughout the course of one painting. Yossifor also edits by scraping and redoing full paintings continuously. The rhythm of doing and undoing is in each painting and is amplified in the paintings as a group.
Through the textural indents and subtle rises, the viewer can experience the performative aspect of these paintings by witnessing the decisions that Yossifor makes when she paints.
