Press Release

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – AMERINGER | McENERY | YOHE is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent works by Sandra Mendelsohn Rubin. The exhibition will open on 24 April and will remain on view through 31 May 2014. A public reception for the artist will be held on 24 April from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

In this body of work, Sandra Mendelsohn Rubin creates small, meticulously detailed paintings of the rural Northern California landscape where she lives.

After years of dedication to working exclusively from life, Rubin has incorporated the use of digital photography as a supplement in her recent paintings. Instead of compromising her work, the addition of this tool has broadened her scope and made possible the many paintings from an aerial perspective. With the aerials in particular, it has enabled Rubin to portray the human presence in the context of the natural environment.

Each canvas is built up with several layers of paint, all carefully mixed and applied undiluted without the use of glazes. The small scale of these works enhances the detailed application of paint. This intensity of detail allows the viewer to feel a physical connection with the surface depicted.

Although the rural Northern California landscape remains her inspiration, water is the primary focus in these paintings. It is the element that ties this particular body of work together. It is present in some form, whether man-made or natural, on each canvas with the exception of one. With the subject of water as a focal point, it is a reflection on its implicit presence in everyday life.
